***Critical Dates for 2006 offseason***

Below is a listing of all the important dates this offseason leading up to the start of the 2006 regular season. This post will be updated with more exact dates as the NFL releases more information (e.g. the 2006 NFL schedule). I will be updating the rules page tonight to reflect the information in this post.

Franchise and Transition Players
May 5th - This is the last day you can declare franchise or transition players. Since the RFA period's start date may shift according to our rookie draft I wanted to make sure to have a set date for franchise and transition players being due. Note that you can declare franchise and transition players at any point up to this date (as several have) and can change your tags up to this date as well, so I suggest you get it done early to avoid missing the deadline altogether and then if you want to change it you can. Missing this date can really hurt your team, so make sure you don't miss this.

Rookie Draft
May 6th - Our rookie draft will take place one week after the NFL draft. The NFL draft is a week later than usual this year so it'll push our rookie draft back into May (May 6th in particular). The rookie draft will be held on the forum (in the "Rookie Draft" forum) and each person will have a maximum of 24hrs to make their pick before they are skipped. Payment for season 2 is also due before you will be allowed to make a selection in the rookie draft (or bid on a RFA). If your selection comes up and your payment has not been received your pick will be skipped.

Start of Restricted Free Agency
~May 9th - Restricted Free Agency will start at 12:01am the day after our rookie draft ends so May 9th is just an estimation (assuming our rookie draft takes about 2-3 days though it could be less or more). The plan was to keep things simple by just starting it May 1st but because the NFL draft is a week later this year it is going to push this back a bit. RFA will still last 1 month, so if it starts on May 9th it will end on June 9th, etc. No new bids will be accepted after the closing date; bidding in process may continue beyond this date until a final offer is reached for a player. Normal free agency will be closed during the RFA period.

Retain unbid RFA's
~June 16th - After RFA ends teams may retain their restricted free agents that were not bid on by another team during restricted free agency at no cost, so long as they are assigned a contract within 1 week of the end of restricted free agency. All other players do not have to have contracts assigned until the normal contract due date.

Active Roster Size Trimmed to 20 Players
August 17th - Note that developmental players do not count towards your active roster size if and only if they have been declared as developmental players (remember developmental players are moved back to the active roster during the offseason, so you need to redeclare them).

Active Roster Size Trimmed to 19 Players
August 24th

Active Roster Size Trimmed to 18 Players
August 31st

August 31st - Every player on your active roster must have a contract assigned to him by this date.

Reminder, the deadline to have rosters down to 19 players is Thursday night. Penalty is 1dd for each day you spend over the limit.

The following teams still have more than 19 active players:

Another reminder...deadline for 18 players AND CONTRACTS is this Thursday!!!

Remember 18 is both a minimum AND a maximum. If you're under 18 players since FA bids take a week you must show me that you're trying to acquire that 18th player (basically you need to have a FA bid open).

Pretty much right except for defense (not that it matters since I don't think any defenses were franchised). As posted in the RFA List link:

Franchise Player Minimum Contracts by Position

Quarterback: 4 years
Wide Receiver: 4 years
Running Back: 4 years
Tight End: 2 years
Kicker: 1 year
Defense: 1 year

The defense is 1 year because it is based on contracts at the start of RFA (a defense was signed to 4 years recently, but this doesn't count towards the average since they were signed after the minimum contracts were calculated).

Thanks for adding it here in case anyone missed it before.

After Thursday, do cut players begin to count 1 year against the cap? So you can cut players and avoid penalty up until Thursday?

If you're clearing room for a FA you can cut yourself below 18 by Thursday and not be penalized so long as you have a FA bid open before Friday and keep one open if you are outbid (either for the same player or opening a new one on another player).

Where in the rules does it say that it is mandatory to field an 18 team squad? I can't go with 17 players to start the season if I want to? The only penalty clause I see is if you go OVER the 18 player limit.
